The "Take Responsibility" Strategy
June 19, 2012
All successful people love to see the REALITY of a situation and always love being immersed in it. They are always doing reality checks. Let's stop down for a reality check today on Success Tips, as we talk about the REALITY of blaming others vs. taking responsibility.
REALITY CHECK: THE BLAME OTHERS STRATEGY
Just about anyone who writes about career success will tell you that it's EASY to blame others for where you are in your career and in life. If you blame others for your career, your problems or failures in life -- no matter who you blame -- this is a reality check that you are using the BLAME OTHERS STRATEGY to explain why you are failing.
Do you blame previous bosses, previous companies you worked for, your parents, corporate America, the industry in which you work or worked, your neighbor, your banker, your family, bad companies, the weather, your friend, the stock market, those more wealthy than you, the solar system, those less wealthy than you, or literally any number of people, places, things, or situations for your current position? Welcome to the BLAME OTHERS STRATEGY. You are on track and executing it beautifully.
The BLAME OTHERS STRATEGY feels great. It allows you to not have to face your weaknesses. You can simply hide behind "it's THEIR fault" and that way you never have to expend any energy to make yourself better. It is primarily rooted in laziness.
The only problem with using the BLAME OTHERS strategy is that it doesn't work as a means to attract future success. Blaming others will most definitely make you feel good inside, but it's ONLY you that is feeling better.
The cost of the "feel good" blaming is that it will then hold you back from moving forward. Why? Because you have already rationalized WHY something occurred (it's somebody else's fault), and so no change is required on your part. You are NOT required to then make yourself more competitive, sharper, faster or better. If you are currently using this strategy, you might want to pay attention to where YOU are in life at this moment. Are others in a better position than you? How is blaming others for your career position in life working out, are you GAINING success by using this strategy?
REALITY CHECK: THE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGY
The reality check here is the good news going forward. And here is the good news: You didn't get to where you are in life because of anyone but yourself, and you will NOT get to where you are going in life in the future because of anyone BUT yourself.
Use a different track -- the TAKE RESPONSIBILITY track -- and watch your career take off. By using this OPPOSITE strategy, you suddenly have all the weight shifted.
The future has NOTHING to do with the past. You can change today ... you can flip the switch today ... you can become more successful for tomorrow by making yourself better today. That's your reality check for today!
