Your "People" Are Everything
March 19, 2013
In the great circle of life and success, one thing will stand out as your greatest asset to achievement: the people around you. Your "people." The people closest to you ... the people pushing you to succeed ... your family, your friends, your coaches, your mentors. Since the beginning of time, it has always been about those you surround yourself with. And the good news is, that is still true today.
NOBODY WINS ALONE
In order to carry out your vision of success, you will need many people on your side. Each will need to perform a specialized function. How well you choose these folks around you will determine in large part how successful you will become, because nobody wins alone. Winning and success are definitely team sports.
For example, there are things that you want to accomplish, and know that you want to accomplish, but you might have no idea on how to get there. I find myself in that situation regularly. I see a particular goal in my mind and can't figure out how to get there. In order for me to make the goal, I simply need to find the person or people to bridge the learning gap between where I am and where I want to go. Someone has already done what I want to do. Therefore, all I need to do is find the person who has done it and have that person teach me. What a successful concept! Never stop being a LEARNER.
Every time you accomplish something big, look around. There are a ton of people who helped you get there. You did NOT do it all on your own. They either helped you directly or indirectly.
FOCUS THOSE AROUND YOU
Your job as the achiever is to get the team focused on the objective. You will need them to get there. Every person who is focused on the objective puts you one step closer to your success. In order to do this, you must get everyone on your team to be pulling in the same direction at the same time. This requires good communications skills. If you need help in that area, you will need to find a way to INCREASE your communication levels so the team knows which way it is headed.
By getting your people to see the vision you have determined for yourself, they can then move to advance the team in the right direction. This works for anything in life, from developing a financial plan, to achieving a great weight loss, quitting smoking, achieving a great victory in business, and so on.
Napoleon Hill called it the "Mastermind Alliance," and we have discussed it many times before here in Success Tips. If you get a chance, please pick up "Think and Grow Rich," one of the greatest books of all time. It's not just about achieving material wealth (as the title seems to infer); it covers basically every angle of a successful life. The "Mastermind Alliance" chapter is worth the entire price of the book alone!
APPRECIATE YOUR PEOPLE
I have a true appreciation for the people I work with, since each person has a very important job on our team -- from the folks who sweep the floor to the biggest execs. Everyone is playing an important part, and I make sure they know it. There are no "UN-important" jobs. Every job is important and the person doing that job is critical to our success as a team. Just because you may happen to be leading a team, that does not make you any more special than anyone else on the team. Everyone pitches in and gets the job done.
Recently, my friend Steve Kelly sent me a picture from our high school days. There we were, running the audio board for the high school play -- we were sophomores in high school and in charge of the school's auditorium sound for the play, "Flowers For Algernon." I still remember and appreciate our high-powered audiophile team for that job - Steve Kelly and Chris Moore. (I have lost touch with Chris but still speak regularly with Steve, who is in the radio business to this day!).
The play was a big success, and we were the reason the audience could hear the play and the tons of sound effects we had to drop in at precise times. It was not an easy job for high school kids to pull off, but we were drafted based upon our basement radio station experience and love for all things audio. There was no way any of us could have done it without the other backing up our every move. What worked then still works today.
PICK YOUR PEOPLE CAREFULLY
You surround yourself with those who will help you succeed. You choose your "Mastermind Alliance" in life. Be sure you are choosing wisely. When the chips are down, you want winners at your side. Surround yourself with only the best, and your future will be SECURED with success.
