Success Tips Live
October 29, 2013
Had a great time the other day while speaking at a local high school. I love to do those speeches and if your message gets through to just one student, you know you have done a great job. You can see how teachers love their work; it's such a challenge to come up with material to teach and keep the students interested.
I was invited to speak to three classes of high school students. The subject was life and career success. Of course, the subject is a natural for me and if anything, I would have trouble packing it all into the short time allowed. What to talk about? What lessons are the most important out of such a large selection of topics? To be sure to cover only the very biggest and best topics, I printed off the previous Success Tips and handed it out to all the students before we began.
I knew it was going to be a great day when I was met by one of the students to take me back to the classroom. She was exceedingly bright and articulate. Knew what she wanted in life, and already at this young age was determining what she would do with her life and how she would get there. A senior in high school. Immediately my faith in kids is restored ... they are very smart these days!
After a fabulous introduction by my friend who is an executive at Disney, we were off and running!
KIDS GET IT
What a joy to speak to them. They have great attitudes, not yet spoiled by years of focusing on problems and negatives and being beaten down by the too-heavy stuff that life can often dish out. No one teaches you how to deal with that stuff when it comes along, so here was the chance to help the next generation. It occurred to me that we should be teaching these messages to ALL high school seniors in this country so when they get out there and the world starts beating them up, they KNOW how to deal with it, to RISE to the challenge!
Once up in front of the class I asked if anyone in the room wanted to be a success in their career and in life. Every hand went up. "GREAT!" I exclaimed, now you have the exact keys to success right in front of you ... and if you follow all 10 of these rules, you WILL be a success!" I held up the sheet of paper and told them that if they wanted to be a success, it was all right there on the sheet, and I WISHED someone had taught me these 10 rules when I was in high school, because I had to learn all these laws and rules of success on my own from years of hard work, failures and lessons.
We talked about goals, fear stopping you, never listen to the negative people, every law, every success rule. We explained personality types, the hows and whys of success, and more. Many took a ton of notes. One girl actually made a comment about goal setting and explained the "Law of Attraction" to the class. This is a girl who will be successful, having already been seeking this information out!
GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE
For me, I learned just as much from the kids as they learned from me. Their questions talked about an amazing range of topics centered around success. I left tired but once again feeling really good about the youth of America.
The best part of the day was at the end of one of the classes, a kid with a backpack came up, looked me in the eye, and said "Wow, that was awesome, my entire perspective of how I look at life has just changed!"
I guess we made the goal of reaching that one student!
