The Time Is Now
April 8, 2014
There is no time like the present. The time is NOW to pump up your career, your success, your life. This week in Success Tips, we talk about precious time -- and what you plan to do with it.
TIME: THE CLOCK OF SUCCESS
Next year is going to go by whether you decide to do something with it or not. You can't stop time. The only thing you can do about time is find the best way to control it. You can shape your future by being the best at controlling the hours in your day. Rather than sit around the house, find the way in which you will benefit from the use of time and get on with it. Action creates RESULTS!
It took me a while in life to understand the importance of time. But when I got the lesson, I really got the lesson. It hit me like a ton of bricks and changed my life forever. All it took to learn it was ... you guessed it ... a little time!
LESSONS FROM TAD
Years ago, I was involuntarily enrolled in a time management program. It was one of two things. Either someone above me thought I wasted a lot of time and wanted to set me straight, or (as I like to think) someone in upper management had identified me early on as having a "chance" to advance to the level of manager, so one day I got the call that I would be undergoing time management training along with a few other people.
While I thought I already knew about time management, I thought it would be a waste of time, but agreed to go along for the ride. After introductions on the phone, the package arrived in the mail with notebooks and charts, as we started in with regular phone meetings twice a week to discuss progress.
The instructors name was Tad Griffin and he was outstanding. His only job was to make us better, to be a coach, so it was easy to like the guy, plus he was a really likable person on his own.
The first thing Tad assigned us was something that made the biggest impact. In the package was a sheet that had one-minute intervals down the left column. For every minute of one day of our choosing, we were to track EVERYTHING we did. Literally everything. From bathroom breaks, to lunch, to specifically what we were working on every minute.
TRACKING MY WASTED SUCCESS TIME
There it was -- in black and white in front of me. Even I, with a completely untrained eye, could see after one day of tracking every minute what was going on and why my effectiveness could be propelled into the stratosphere if I only took a few steps to FOCUS my time and efforts on common goals. To make a list. To follow the list. To have main goals, side goals, and "C" goals on the side. It opened my eyes so much that I felt "transformed" as a human being.
As the weeks went by, we all got better and better at getting things accomplished. I ended up so excited for the phone calls that I couldn't wait. I loved the course. I can't even relate anything even remotely as powerful as getting a hold on my time. Maybe learning how to spell? It was that big.
Tad kept drilling us to choose to do the most important thing at every possible moment. Once we stepped back and could lay out the day fully in front of us and attack the biggest jobs first, keeping track as we went, the days started to fly by and amazing things were getting accomplished. With everything cleared off the plate, the next day was another adventure ready to be tackled.
All the while, the main goals were kept in front of us so they were always there. I realized that I could exponentially increase my chances of success by simply finding more time in the day to do the things that would get me closer to my goals. Thank you, Tad, for the outstanding instruction.
Harness your time, and your success increases!
