Break Out, Break Through
April 29, 2014
The way to success is to break out ... and break through. It's a two-part set of actions --and today, we explain them both on Success Tips.
THE PROFIT BREAKS OUT
My favorite TV show is called "The Profit" starring CEO and entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis. On the show, Marcus fixes failing businesses. They are small businesses, but the lessons are amazing, timely and really hit home.
He basically walks in, assesses what the business is all about, determines what would need to be done to save the failing business, and then writes a check to the owner to buy a percentage of the business, then takes over and fixes the business. Every time, he is met with some degree of pushback from the current owner of the business.
Marcus knows that the business is in trouble because the owner is doing something wrong, and almost always that business owner can't see what they are doing wrong. They usually just don't get it, or are defending previous stupid moves.
As I play along with the story line, I can usually find myself siding with Marcus as he identifies problems and issues within the operation of the business. You wonder about these owners of businesses caught in this trap. They are either too ego-driven to see what is going on, or clinching tightly to "the way we always have done it" and it just runs them into the ground.
As the show plays on and Marcus digs further, it's just a FAILURE of the business to follow universal laws and operate good, solid basics most of the time. Stupid things like 80% of the sales floor space being taken up by the things that create the lowest percentage of profit margin, stuff like that. How do these owners miss this stuff? They mix a lot of time and success draining activities, emotions, or lack of systems and it kills the business.
BREAK OUT TO BREAK THROUGH
Every time, it requires that the current failing owners BREAK OUT of their state of mind (FAILURE) in which they are trapped in order to see the successful future. Sometimes, the owners just can't make it over the hump, and Marcus throws in the towel, cutting his losses as an investor and walking away. I am cheering at this point; why waste time on an owner who is destined to guide themselves to failure? The owners who do break out of their state of mind always break through to greater success.
In order to do something successfully, many times you must "Break Out" of your old habits and ways. While you may have had a great time, the truth is that the way you are doing things may not be the best way in which to do it. Always look for alternate ways to break out of your old habits and failures. There is a solution to your problem - and we know this because there are no problems created that do NOT have an attached solution.
Just like on the Profit, push yourself to find your weaknesses. Be sure you are not above finding that which is holding you back. Then, you are clear to stay focused on your prize, set your goals high, and BREAK THROUGH to your ultimate success!
