Over the coming weeks here in Success Tips, I want to go back and revisit some of the most basic foundations that this column was originally founded on many years ago. Sometimes, it's just good to have a refresher to prepare us for the world today. It can be downright crazy out there!
The first foundation I want to cover is You, Inc. This basic foundation -- the inescapable law that you are the President and CEO of your own personal services corporation: You, Inc!
YOU WORK FOR YOURSELF AND ALWAYS HAVE
You always have worked for yourself. No matter what your paycheck says, where it comes from or who it comes from, you probably just never realized it. At the end of the day, you are in control of what you produce, and what legacy you leave behind wherever you are. The companies you work for are simply stops along the way as you gather knowledge to take you to the next upward level. And the next upward level might not be within your current sphere of career.
As I look back on my long career so far, I have to laugh. Every single job I have done for others -- regardless of what company I was working for -- has prepared me for the present time. It's all about learning, getting the lessons, and then using those lessons to put you on purpose to obtain your ultimate dream!
IT'S ALL GOOD
Looking back, I have nothing but praise for companies I have worked for and the people we worked with through the years. Each company, its culture and people taught me something new and different -- and as a benefit, paid me to actually produce results for them while learning at the same time! Are you kidding me, how good is that? By knowing you are ultimately working for yourself, and your goals firmly set, every minute of every day can be focused on what you need to learn to get you to your next personal achievement level.
Judge every situation you are placed in as "Good," regardless of how you might want to first characterize it as "Bad". This will move you more quickly to future success. Learn the lesson from it, be 100% thankful, pick up and move on once you have received the lesson. The FASTER you receive the lesson and start moving ahead, the FASTER you get to success. Help others do the same by passing it on so they, too can become CEO of YOU, Inc.
Funny, but I have yet to be placed in a "Bad" situation where I did not learn how to do something - and I have been fired, downsized, promoted, and held some very high positions with some very great companies. Good and bad? Some would attach "good" or "bad" to each of those situations, but the truth is they are just sequential learning experiences in life, and I remain thankful for each because every one of them helped me move to my next phase. Ultimate gratitude here.
DON'T FORGET YOUR TAL
So, welcome to the CEO's office. I like the view from here, and you will, too. All good CEOs plan ahead. Plan for every part of your career, including the NEGATIVE RETURN. Just like the Space Shuttle flights, which knew the exact point where, if an emergency occurred, they would call out "TAL" (Transoceanic Abort to Landing), then land in Spain, France or England instead of back in Florida, because they were going too fast and too high above the Atlantic to just "turn around" to land back at KSC. You could hear it called out on every flight at T-plus two-and-a-half minutes after launch with the orbiter really moving on the way to orbit. Those crews rehearsed that emergency abort hundreds of times before actual launch to where an abort was no longer a "disaster;" it was simply a natural sequenced event to the success of a landing at some other field which was pre-programmed into guidance.
Know that point where you are in your TAL condition. If it's abort time, pull the pin and abort! If you have planned correctly, you will not have one problem. If you have NOT planned for your own personal version of TAL, then you will be undergoing some pain before you learn the "I should have rehearsed my TAL" lesson. But it's all perfection. Find the way to enjoy learning the lessons in life.
YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE BOSS
You are in control of your future. You also control who you work with. The great news is that your future has nothing to do with your past, if that is what you choose. Or it can have everything to do with your past if you decide that you want it to be about your past. New and exciting roads are open for you; the entire world is out there!
Just remember, you are President and CEO of "You, Incorporated." And that is lesson one. Always be a CEO. No matter what you do, think and plan ahead like a CEO. Because you already are.
