The Success Hunters
March 30, 2011
My son and sometimes will watch the TV show, "Ghost Hunters," and get a great laugh at that show and how it is produced. Basically, this guy Zak didn't believe in ghosts until he saw one, then he dedicated his professional life to trying to capture ghosts on film and in audio. He picked up two cohorts, Nick and Aaron, and as a group the three of them travel to the "scariest" places in the world to try to contact the paranormal spirit world.
These guys lock themselves overnight inside haunted mansions, houses, old army barracks, prisons, hospitals ... you name it. They confront the "mean" spirits by calling them out and being confrontational. It's good entertainment watching these three go after the unseen. They pull out all kind of gadgets that supposedly indicate the presence of a spirit, from mysterious talking boxes, electromagnetic field meters, temperature gauges, infrared cameras and more. They are investigators, leaving it up to the audience as to whether anything they document is "real" or not.
During each show, they identify eyewitnesses, talk to people working or living in the building, give you the history ... and it's generally a lot of fun. It is really hilarious watching them get scared to death by unknown sounds within the building while they are locked in overnight.
A NEW SHOW IS BORN!
After thinking about it for a while, we decided that someone could start a similar show "Success Hunters," whereby you travel from office to office identifying only those who are hugely successful and then following them around doing interviews with eyewitnesses to the successes they have had. This way, you can come up with WHY and HOW those folks are successful.
Career success is not just an accident. If you want to be successful in any area of your career in 2011, you will need to apply MATHEMATICS to make it happen! It's not about what you "wish" to have happen, it's about your actual VALUE to your field versus what is NEEDED in your field. Match those two ... and you are off and running. If Zak, Aaron and Nick from Ghost Hunters were to follow a successful person around to document the HOW and WHY they are successful, it could be easily quantified. Plus, in just a few shows, you would start to see patterns emerge that are common among all success. We see these same patterns emerge in the "Ghost Hunters" show.
This is all sounds very simple, but is missed by most who are attempting to reach higher in their career field.
STEP ONE: GET OUTSIDE YOURSELF
If you can get outside of yourself, step back and look at yourself as a product and give an honest review of what you have to offer, then you can embark on INCREASING your value by stacking the deck in your favor. Much like the "Ghost Hunters" crew investigates and documents, look at yourself from the outside. What is causing you to be in the position you are in today?
STEP TWO: KNOW YOUR NEGATIVES
After looking at and documenting where you are, you need to start prying into WHY you are where you are if you DO NOT want to be there. What do you feel is holding you back? Why? Look for ways to MINIMIZE these issues, go around them, or work them into VALUABLE positives for you.
STEP THREE: KNOW YOUR POSITIVES
What is creating the spark? What is your value and how does it fit within your organization or your business? You need to know what is driving your success, as well as what is hampering your success. You can only grow if you can know and accept BOTH. If you focus too much on POSITIVE or too much on NEGATIVE, this creates IMBALANCE, which will only cause you to be short-circuited.
STEP FOUR: FORMULATE YOUR ACTION PLAN
Once you know where you are, where you want to go, your positives and your negatives -- and overlay all of that with what is needed in your chosen field -- you can then build an action plan on what to do, who to get in front of and by when. Be sure to write this plan down, as it will be most important to you to have a written guide.
LAUNCH YOURSELF TO SUCCESS!
The final action is to TAKE action. Don't just sit there. No one cares about your success as much as YOU do. Sure, folks will help you get there, but in the end it is YOU who will determine your final altitude. You can't "coast" uphill; you have to work at it. Once you have followed the steps above, you too can be a huge success in any field. Good luck and have fun!
