If I can choose someone to be in charge of a project for me, I want the person who is most passionate about succeeding in the job.
Having dealt with literally hundreds of contractors in various home situations through my life, I can tell you that the person who loves what they do will always do a better job for you.
TAKES ALL TYPES
The guy who is working on your septic system deserves just as much respect as the doctor performing surgery on you. By treating everyone around you with respect, you not only lift them up, you also help yourself, because they will want to go the extra mile for you.
One great way to motivate those around you is to hold them up to a standard that is even higher than where they are today. For example, if you hear something good about someone, tell them so. You would be amazed at how much of an impact this makes on people. Just telling someone you are working with that they are known for doing well on this or that -- and passing along their reference -- can have an impact that lasts a lifetime. Telling them they are doing a great job, or that you heard they accomplished such and such is an amazing and powerful thing. Be sincere, and pass along the powerful information.
When I was in middle school, I answered an ad hanging in the hallway to help clean up school rooms after school. I would report directly after school to the Janitors' cubbyhole closet/office and pick up my bucket, water, squeegee and sponges, and towels for cleaning. It was a great way to pick up a few bucks a couple times a week as spending money and taught me the power of praise.
The Janitor I worked for at the high school taught me a lot. He hired me to clean the blackboards and take out the trash in all the rooms at the school, but he also taught me the power of praise. I still remember that lesson all these years later.
He really loved what he did, and had lots of self-esteem ... enough self-esteem to pass on to me that I was doing a great job as well. It showed me that no matter what the job in life, it is important. It changed the way I approached everyone in all walks of life. Here was a guy who could have had a bad attitude but was instead the exact opposite. He was passionate about what he did and shared that with me as well.
Passion will take you far. Passion stands for pass ions, literally the transfer of energy. The more passion you have, properly directed, the greater your level of success.
