What Did They Know And When Did They Know It?
-
We went through this with the too-big-to-fail banks, and now we have to ask ourselves something: If General Motors knew, based on internal investigation documents, that they had problems with the ignition switches that turned out to be killing people, and told the Justice Department they didn't know anything or invoked attorney-client privilige, they, it would appear, at least in one person's opinion, lied and/or obstructed to try to escape blame. So, what do we do about it? Is a fine and "don't do it again" enough? Should everyone involved go to jail? Should there be a crippling fine, and if so, does that punish the rank-and-file workers who weren't involved in the deception? What's the appropriate response? (New York Times)
