They're Cigars. We Know What They Do. Leave 'Em Alone
-
For 150 years, Tampa's last local cigar factory has held on, rolling the city's signature product, keeping the tradition alive. That may now end. Why? FDA regulation. The FDA was handed the ability to strictly regulate cigar manufacturing and sales the way they do it for cigarettes, and the old factory may not meet the new equipment standards; in addition, although the factory makes premium cigars that would normally fit an exemption to the rules, because the cigars are not whole-leaf and are not entirely hand-rolled, the exemption won't apply. So a tradition may die and people may lose their jobs over rules that, arguably, shouldn't apply to a small, local business like that. (New York Times)
