It's Always Someone Else's Kid, Until It's Yours
-
The thing that's especially difficult to read about the triple homicide in Michigan, in which a Criagslist sex arrangement ended with a pregnant 18-year-old dead, her boyfriend decapitated, and the killer a suicide, isn't just the gruesome scenario but the dead woman's family trying to grapple with the situation, because, well, they have to accept that she was up to some disturbing things. They blame, in part, Michigan's laws setting 17 as the age of adulthood, meaning they lost the ability to keep her at home, and they recognize that she exercised free will, but they also blame the boyfriend for taking her down the wrong road. But at her death, she was 18, and how long can you keep a child a child? You can teach her the right things, but if she wants to rebel, she'll rebel. Dealing with this, for parents, must be intensely hard. (Grand Rapids Press)
