Subway? At Least Walk A Few More Blocks To Hodad's, It's Local

San Diego has been aggressive in trying to keep Comic-Con from moving to another city, like Anaheim, which has pulled Comic-Con sister Wondercon from San Francisco and has bid to get Comic-Con, too. And you'd assume, based on the number of attendees, that it's a huge economic boon for the city. One small thing: The attendees apparently don't spend much per capita on things other than hotel rooms and the stuff they buy at the show. The per capita spend: $603. For four days. Most attendees spent everything just getting there and for their share of a hotel room, but when it's time to eat and drink, they either queue up at Subway (I have been on that line and, yes, it's massive) or see if they can cadge free food at an event. Now, in fairness, in my times there, I note that many of not most of the restaurants in the Gaslamp and East Village areas are busy during Comic-Con, but not to the extent that you can't get in. The other part is that they don't get the kind of sponsorships other shows get, either. But SOMEONE has to be making money, or why would it be such a prize? (New York Times)
