Um... I'll Take A Cab, Actually

What happens when a city doesn't ever really address the homeless situation as a problem but instead lets the homeless kind of rule some of the main streets downtown? That's San Francisco, where I've learned to avoid some areas because they're just pretty... unclean. And it's worst when you go down the steps to the BART subway, where pee is far from the worst thing you'll encounter. Poop? Yeah, they got that. Rotting food? Oh, sure. At one point, which we reported here, they had to call out a biohazard team to clean poop and pee out of an escalator. They say they're doing the best they can to clean the stations, but they don't want to kick out the homeless people who essentially use the stations and stairwells as a shelter. And as long as they allow that, the stations will be disgustingly foul. Even New York's subway -- and L.A.'s, and Chicago's, and Philly's, and Washington's -- is cleaner. (San Francisco Chronicle)
