One Of The Last Practitioners Of A Lost Art
-
Dead: Tony Auth, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, former Philadelphia Inquirer staffer for many years, at 72 of brain cancer. When I was a cartoonist many years ago, he was tremendously influential on me -- he didn't label stuff unnecessarily, he used clean, loose lines, and he didn't just illustrate a news story, he strove to make a point with humor. When I met him about 35 years ago, he talked about trying not to do what everyone else was doing, and that stuck even as I moved from drawing to writing. And it's also a reminder that the editorial cartoonist is beyond endangered -- most papers, if they use anyone, take syndication, and online, there's less and less of it. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
