More People Will Hear About The Ban Than Would Have Seen The Ad Anyway
-
I've been seeing a lot of ads on buses around here (L.A.) for the new Fox series "Red Band Society" -- in fact, the 344 bus that passed me while I was running this morning had one on its side -- and didn't think anything about it. But the ads are being pulled off the buses by the L.A. Metro transit authority. Why? Because in the ad, Octavia Spencer's character -- a tough nurse with a heart of gold, of course -- is labeled "Scary Bitch." Come on. In context, is anyone REALLY offended? It's a fictional character. All the characters are labeled with the kind of stereotypical nicknames and descriptions teens (the main characters) would use, like "Coma Boy," "Mean Girl," that kind of thing. Yes, "bitch" is a bad word, but context ought to mean something. (KCBS-TV/Los Angeles)
