Sorry, Kid, You Can't Be Independent. Too Dangerous
-
A mom ran into trouble with Texas Child Protective Services because she let her 6-year-old play alone outside. Here's the thing: We grew up going off on our own at a very young age. I remember going out and playing in the yard, walking by myself to the school playground, walking by myself to the town swimming pool or to friends' houses or to the A&P, walking to school 2 miles solo, even ultimately walking a mile to a bus stop and taking a bus, alone, to New York. That's unheard of now, but, statistically, kidnapping and other bad things are extremely unlikely, and if a kid's been raised right and knows how to react to threats, there's little risk. So, has society gone too far in the overprotective direction? (CBS News)
