There's Something To Be Said For The Simple Life
-
This story is one that some of you might identify with: This guy blew out of town -- small town Missouri -- as soon as he graduated high school, got called back when his mom was injured, left again and headed to L.A,, got a job with Disney, but once again had to go home for family reasons. And then he met a girl -- a beauty pageant winner -- and decided to marry her and stay. And he did, for years and years and years. He's 99 years old now, in the same house for 95 years. He left Disney in the '30s and told people that there wasn't much future in that. He ended up painting signs and doing cartoons for the local weekly. And he's a very well-known guy... locally. Which raises the eternal question: Better to be the big fish in a small pond or a little fish in the big ocean? In radio, we've been there. I answered the latter, heading to L.A., but there's a nobility and security in going with smaller market longevity, and while everyone in that situation probably wonders if they should have taken a shot at the big time, a lot of big timers wonder if life wouldn't have been better, and a lot less complicated, had they stayed in a smaller town.
