State-Sanctioned Sexism
-
The Pennsylvania state attorney general's office is using an unusual defense against a lawsuit filed by a state prison worker who was raped by an inmate with a history of assaulting women working at prisons: They're blaming the victim. No, really, the state's defense to the allegation that they knew this guy was trouble and let him have unsupervised access to the offices is to say that the victim "acted in a manner which in whole or in part contributed to the events." The rapist was convicted and sentenced to life, yet the Attorney General's office -- the Attorney General herself, already under fire for various cases in which she appears to be hiding stuff from public scrutiny, claims she didn't know they were doing this -- is using the victim shaming defense. It's an embarrassment. (CNN)
