Government Demanding Speech Be Turned Over... This Never Ends Well
-
Um... wait. So conservative Christian pastors in Houston tried to get a referendum to repeal the city's Equal Rights Ordinance on the ballot but failed, and they're suing the city because they say the city attorney wrongly rejected their petitions for not having enough valid signatures. Okay, that's up to a court to decide. But the city has now subpoenaed the pastors to get their sermons opposing the ordinance or even referring to gay issues or the Mayor, and... the government demanding to review the content of a church sermon? Isn't that a little chilling towards the pastors' First Amendment rights? I mean, look, you don't have to agree with them -- I probably don't -- to feel like they should have the right to say what they want in their sermons and that the city shouldn't be demanding anything. If you're inclined to say, well, they're being political, they should hand those sermons over, imagine the show on the other foot and liberal pastors being harassed by a conservative Mayor.
