Don't You Waive Your Right To A Speedy Trial When You Go On The Lam?
-
A woman did not want her father's murder 27 years ago to go unpunished, so she investigated and investigated the case and finally came up with evidence identifying the killer. Closure? Hardly: A judge threw out the indictment because it took too long and the defendant was being deprived of his right to a speedy trial. But get this: The guy, who was a teenager at the time, fled to the Dominican Republic after being identified as a person of interest in 1986, and the cops didn't do anything about it. So he was avoiding arrest. He eventually returned to the U.S., was arrested in 2013, and now goes free. When you see cold cases on TV, remember that it only takes one judge to let a possible murderer off the hook. (WPIX-TV/New York)
