Muslim groups asked the Montgomery County Board of Education in Maryland to put the holy day of Eid al-Adha on the official calendar, just like Christmas and Yom Kippur and other Christian and Jewish holidays. The response: The board has stripped the names of religious holidays off the calendar, thus avoiding offense to anyone. The holidays will still be days off, but no names on the calendar. Even the Muslim leaders think this was drastic; They say all they wanted was equal treatment. Eid al-Adha isn't a formal day off for everyone, so there's an argument that only days off merit mention of the holidays behind them, but now there will just be days off with no explanation.
