We sometimes decry the effect of investors' pressure on business to do things that are bad, just for the short term. Here we go again, with an investment firm buying chunks of both Staples and Office Depot and pushing hard for the two to merge. Keep in mind that Office Depot just absorbed OfficeMax, so there are two national office supply retailers left. If this investor has its way, there'll be one. Bad for the public -- no competition -- but good for the investor. (Boston Herald)
