If LeBron Was Still Here, Nobody Would Dare Question What The Heat Wanted To Do
-
I saw in the L.A Times this morning a photo of meatheads in Rams jerseys celebrating after the Inglewood City Council approved going ahead with planning for an NFL stadium to bring the Rams back to Southern California. That came to mind when I later read this article about how, when taxpayers were convinced to spend on a new arena for the Miami Heat back in the '90s, they were promised a waterfront park for the public would be part of it. And now we find out that it's years later and they lied -- not only is there no park, but the Heat uses the land at very cheap rates (about 25% of market) for use as valet parking or a staging area for events. And they don't want to give it up, now that the city wants the land. There's also a battle over whether the city would use it for a museum for Cuban exiles or as a park, with other ethnic groups complaining "what about us?" Bottom line: They promise all sorts of benefits to get you to agree to hand tax breaks and cash to sports franchises so they can build their palaces. And then they renege. And they know you won't complain, because you aren't paying attention. (Miami Herald)
