At These Prices, You Might As Well Use The Beatles' 'Birthday'
-
"Happy Birthday To You" is in court, or, more precisely, Warner-Chappell is battling a challenge to its copyright, which has never been definitively established. See, the song itself is about 120 years old, which would put it in the public domain. But it had different lyrics, and the current version was copyrighted in the 1930s. The challenge is to that copyright, which the complainants say was mistaken. In the meantime, while you can sing it at your birthday party, you can't air it or put it in a movie or on a record without paying up big time. (Courthouse News)
