May It Forever Go On, Go On, Go On, Go On, Go On....

It's been 20 years since the debut of "Father Ted," and if you have never seen the show, rest assured that it is iconic enough in Ireland and the U.K. and among comedy nerds to merit the several articles like this and this one that appeared in the British papers this week with analysis and great moments from the show, although I'd say that these aren't necessarily the funniest moments, nor can the show be encapsulated in just clips. The show, about a bunch of priests exiled by the disapproving church to a horrible windswept island off the coast of Ireland, is about as sacrilegious as possible -- Ted is a gambler who appears to be in the priesthood as a scam and dreams of Vegas, Jack is a drunk who can only shout near-obscenities and grab at women (except for nuns, who send him into "Reverse! Reverse!"), Dougal is close to the dumbest human being ever -- a human Labrador retriever, only without a brain -- and insistent tea lady Mrs. Doyle redefines "annoying." Ridiculous situations -- priests lost in a lingerie department, Ted losing a bet and having to kick the bishop in the ass, Ted and Dougal trying to enter a song contest, a horrifically lame movie protest, a very, very slow milk truck parodying "Speed" -- plunge into surrealism. And because the star, Dermot Morgan, passed away very young before the last series aired, there are only three short seasons to savor. It's worth celebrating. (Metro, London; The Guardian)
