Even If They HAD The Time To Confirm, Most Reporters Don't Bother Anymore
-
Did you see reports a few months back about a German study that claimed that you could lose weight by eating chocolate? It was everywhere (but here; I thought it sounded questionable). And it was a fraud. There was a study, but it was deliberately scientifically meaningless; the whole thing was an attempt to prove that you can get the news media to report ANY health news, no matter how ludicrous on its face, with zero fact-checking. The guy behind it -- a journalist, masquerading as a scientist -- tells all in this i09.com piece. It's a great insight into how easy it is for junk science to make headlines. And it'll make you distrust every health study story you see from here on out. (io9)
