As a Verizon FiOS customer, I was interested in the headline here that says Verizon is "keeping detailed records on customers" to prevent them from switching to other carriers. But then it turned out that what they do is check what channels you DVR, and use that information to, say, offer you free Showtime if you watch a lot of HBO and mention that you're considering going to DirecTV or Cox or Time Warner. And that doesn't seem NEARLY as disturbing an invasion of privacy as the headline indicated. It's really more like a cookie on a website, or your loyalty card at the supermarket: an annoyance, and not everyone's cup of tea, but hardly a cable TV version of the Patriot Act.
