They Need More Room For Their Dozens Of Fans

Sports Move, Vaguely Threatened: The Atlanta Hawks play in Philips Arena, which is a modern facility with a lot of seats that, for the most part, rarely get sold (the Hawks only got really good last year). And it has the requisite luxury suites, a lot of them, a wall of suites on one side of the court. So why are they looking to build a new arena already? Philips is 16 years old, and these buildings should last a LOT longer. Remember Chicago Stadium? 65 years. Boston Garden, the REAL one? 67 years. Even some later models -- the Spectrum, 42 years; Madison Square Garden, almost 50 and still going (with renovations) -- lasted longer. And Staples Center was built at the same time as Philips with wear and tear from THREE major pro franchises and nobody's remotely suggesting that they tear the place down. Are teams just demanding new buildings because they know the local yahoos are suckers? (Atlanta Business Journal)
