Sanctuary, Violated
-
One of the questions that follows the Lafayette theater shooting is why movie theater shootings are so especially haunting, and the answer may lie in the nature of going to a movie. It's an escape, a respite from the real world. When the real world intrudes, it's bad enough. When something like this happens, it reminds us of how vulnerable we are, sitting in a theater or generally in life. It's an especially egregious violation of innocence. But what are we supposed to do, put airport-style security at the doors of every theater because of the occasional Aurora or Lafayette nutjob? (Washington Post)
