Will There Be Refunds If They Move? No? Well, Then
-
San Diego Chargers players Melvin Ingram and Keenan Allen reacted to the news that the Chargers were a) remaining in San Diego for one more season and b) in a tentative deal to move to Inglewood but c) still have a year to make a deal to stay by tweeting demands to fans to buy tickets and support the team. And that's totally tone-deaf. The team has essentially told the fans that unless they -- and the many people in town who AREN'T fans -- not only buy tickets but hand over a lot of money in tax dollars to build them a palace, they'll move up the freeway to L.A. If you know that a team has made plans to abandon you, are you going to buy tickets for what could very well be their last season in town, or would you wait and see whether they'll commit to staying? Funny, though, this is what L.A. went through in '94: the Rams had made clear for a few years that they wanted to move away, and the Raiders were clearly using Irwindale as leverage to get Oakland to build Mount Davis and take them back, and the fans stayed away. And had the fans sold out every game, the teams STILL would have moved. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
