The Zero In Zero Tolerance Is For Zero Sense
-
A high school is being urged by parents not to expel two teens who, in separate cases, were found to have knives in their trucks in the school parking lot. In each case, the knives were forgotten -- one had gone fishing, the other's dad had flipped a pocket knife into the glove compartment -- and were only found after drug-sniffing dogs picked their trucks out, both for that scourge of society, Advil. The state has a law making knife possession on school grounds a misdemeanor that can even result in prison time, and the schools have Zero Tolerance rules about it, hence the expulsion threat. For fishing knives? For a pocket knife in a glove compartment? Has society lost its collective mind? How is the school board not just using common sense and saying, you know, this really isn't what the law was meant to prevent, it's a simple, understandable mistake, don't do it again, case dismissed?
