New York Times TV critic James Poniewozik gives voice here to something I bet you'll agree with: While we're all talking about "too much TV" to watch, there's a related problem in that episodes are too long. You are not imagining this. Premium cable and SVOD services like Netflix are, unlike broadcast networks, not bound by having to hit hard breaks and load up with ads, so episodes run however long they want, and they want long, sometimes longer than the plot requires. Meanwhile, the networks are letting shows run past the traditional limits to try and gain competitive advantage by slopping over to the next slot and discouraging tune-out. The net result: Your TV viewing time is filled up. Are shows too long these days? (New York Times)
