This Also Might Be A Job For Uber Ridesharing

Right in the middle of Potomac, MD, one of the richest towns anywhere, is a neighborhood called Tobytown, and it's predominantly poorer and black -- descendants of slaves still occupy many of the homes. And in order to go to jobs and school, they need to rely on public transportation... but there is none. See, Tobytown is in a fairly remote location, and it's a long way to the bus stops and Metro stations; it's far out enough that a regular bus line would be prohibitively expensive to run, since the surrounding mansions and estates have no need for buses. So, they need a shuttle bus service, but for some reason the state and town can't seem to get it together. This is one of those things that seems to me to be a universal problem with a universal solution: Instead of building trains or adding full-sized bus lines, use small shuttle buses - jitneys - that burn a lot less gas and need a lot fewer riders to make it work, keep to a regular and frequent schedule, have them connect easily to full-sized routes or trains, and you'll get people to work and back a lot more efficiently. No need for big buses, big need for little ones going every 20 minutes or so. (Washington Post)
