Witness To... Everything, Really
-
Dead: Susannah Mushatt Jones, at 116, and, yes, she was the world's oldest (known) person. But the other thing that's even more interesting is that she appears to be the last American born in the 19th century. One woman in Italy is now the only person in the WORLD left who was born in the 19th century. The topic here is that as time moves on, the number of people who remember the recent past dwindles, and perhaps we should be recording more of what they remember from when times were different. The early part of the 20th century doesn't have video or even much audio associated with it, so oral histories are a huge portion of what we can gather about how life really was back then. (BBC)
