But Can You Really Put A Pricetag On Satisfying Politicians' Mass Transit Fetishes?
-
We -- Californians -- spent a fortune to build a light rail line across L.A. all the way to Santa Monica, and the last leg is here, the segment from Culver City to the beach. Very nice, but here's a problem: The idea was to let people who have to commute from Santa Monica to downtown (or vice versa) avoid the suffocating traffic on the 10 freeway or other cross streets. It takes about 40 minutes to go the relatively short distance from Santa Monica to downtown via car. The new Expo Line train takes 50 minutes. So it will NOT save you time. It doesn't even save you parking time, since there's not a lot of parking available at the light rail stops. So, what's the point? The damn train stops for traffic lights, for crossing traffic, at several spots between stations all the way across... what was the point of doing this? (Los Angeles Times)
