Participation Ribbons Don't Mean A Thing
-
Parents in one school district are petitioning to get elementary schools to go back to letter grades, and, no, the schools don't use numbers, either, they use terms like "proficient" and "approaching," which are obviously self-esteem terms. And "proficient" can mean anything from the equivalent of an A to a C, so why would a kid care to do his or her best when the bare minimum will get the same result? It's the 2016 equivalent of pass/fail, and it's what you do when you don't want kids to compete. (WFLX-TV/West Palm Beach)
