He's Moving Closer To His World (Sorry, Joke Understandable By Philly People Only)
-
Dead: Melvin Kampmann. Who? TV station manager. So? Well, he was in charge of ABC affiliate WFIL-TV (now WPVI) Philadelphia in the late '60s and early '70s, and he was the guy who, with research from Frank Magid, came up with the name and format of "Action News." Yes, someone had to come up with the name, and he did. And what he and Magid developed back then is, largely, the same "Action News" that has dominated the market since the mid-'70s and spread to several others. If there's an "Action News" in your market, he's one reason why. Also, after he retired, he opened a Dairy Queen by the beach, which is awesome. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
