Sometimes, 'Other' Is The Only Truthful Option
-
You surely have an opinion about the people who want the right not to have to declare a gender for passport or driver's license purposes. But let's take this story about a person named Dana Zzyym (no, I don't know how it's pronounced) and throw another variable into this mix: Dana can't get a passport (and therefore can't travel out of the country) because they don't have a gender. Really. And not by choice. Born with a boy's name, Dana turned out to be a hermaphrodite, and a childhood attempt to assign male genitalia failed, leaving unidentifiable scar tissue instead of an identifiable penis or vagina. So Dana's really undefined, and picking "M" or "F" wouldn't be accurate. Shouldn't there be an alternative designation in cases like this? (Washington Post)
