He was a library worker at the University of New Hampshire, and he was known for being... thrifty. Okay, cheap. He drove a beater, he spent practically no money, and he died last year with an estate of $4 million as a result, left entirely to the school. You'd think that they'd spend the money on improvements to his beloved library, but you're not thinking like college bureaucrats. No, they're spending $100,000 on the library but $1 million on a video scoreboard for the football stadium, because.... well, they claim he got to be a big football fan while in a nursing home dying, but nobody's buying that. And it raises the question of whether some colleges are more pro sports franchises than learning institutions. (Washington Post)
