New Isn't Always Better
-
Hey, let's convert all incandescent street light bulbs to LED bulbs, right? Because they're better? Not so fast: Cities are now being warned by the American Medical Association that the LED bulbs they put in to replace regular street lights emit unseen blue light that interrupt sleep rhythms and increase health risks. Many cities' response thus far is to ignore the warnings, because the LED lights are more efficient and screw the public's health, because they're all sitting in front of computers and TVs and getting that blue glow anyway. Experts -- I bet some were all for LEDs at the beginning -- say that cities were in too much of a rush to switch, because the Department of Energy and EPA pushed them hard. So your health is secondary to political issues. There's a shock. (Washington Post)
