Winning, Apparently, IS Everything
-
My hometown, when I was growing up there, was definitely not much of a "football town"; after winning a couple of state divisional championships before I got to high school, the teams fell on hard times, and nobody much cared, to the point where they shuffled conferences and "rivals" and it wasn't much of an issue. No more: The town has four high schools, they're all football powerhouses, and it's now being called "Football Town, New Jersey." Which would have driven me crazy if I was a student there now. I always look at Texas towns and "Friday Night Lights" as examples of horrifically misplaced priorities, especially now in an era when we know how football's linked to brain injuries. You don't want to root for your home teams to lose, I know, but should a town go whole-hog into being a football factory, CTE be damned? (Bergen Record)
