Spending, They're Good At. Accomplishing Anything Else, Not So Much
-
Hey, "lessons learned," the L.A. Metro transit system says now that they have to pay nearly $300 million more to a contractor for a project to widen and extend the car pool lane through the Sepulveda Pass. Oh, and after spending over $1.6 BILLION -- 55% more than budgeted -- it HASN'T HELPED TRAFFIC. Why did it cost so much? Because it ALWAYS costs too much. We're talking bureaucrats who are spending YOUR money; they don't care because it isn't theirs. More: the contractor's getting more money and the project fell a year behind schedule because the bureaucrats kept changing the specs and didn't bother to check the route in advance to see what utilities would have to be relocated, which would seem to me to be kind of a prerequisite before you even plan what you're going to do. And we, the L.A. County taxpayers, just handed the same bureaucrats a huge tax increase windfall to spend on more projects, because we are fools. (Los Angeles Times)
