Actually, Not Standing IS A Civics Lesson, Sort Of
-
This middle school kid refuses to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance at school, and, yeah, it's because of Trump. Whatever his reasons, and whatever you think about a 13 year old making a political stand, let's be honest, now, the Pledge is kind of pointless in school, because none of the kids are paying the least bit of attention. It's meaningless droning. I remember just mouthing the words while my classmates slurred their way through it -- "I pledgallegiance tudaflag uhdeeunistasamerica." It was a daily drudgery. Once again, enforced patriotism isn't real patriotism -- teach the kids in history and social studies classes what America really means and it'll stick, but make them repeat words and they'll be thinking about everything else BUT the country.
