Tears Of A Clown When There's No One Around
-
Over the weekend, we learned that Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus is closing after 146 years, and there were two types of reaction: sadness or "good riddance." Times changed, the circus couldn't, and here we are. Me, I don't get how anyone's entertained by the circus, but I didn't like it as a kid, either. Not a clown fan, not an elephant aficionado, not a trapeze spectator, not crazy about making animals "perform." Also, when it was in town and I'd go to the Garden or Spectrum for a basketball or hockey game, the place would smell like elephant poop. So I can live without it. The question here is whether the entire idea of a circus (other than Cirque duSoleil, which is different) is something the time of which has passed by. (AP via Sarasota Herald Tribune)
