We'll Always Have Costco

Seismic change in grocery shopping in the Southeast: Publix is going to stop automatically giving deli customers free sample slices of the meat they're buying on their sandwiches. You can still get the sample if you ask, but you'll have to ask. That's a huge departure for Publix, which is known for great deli sandwiches (I can attest to that; it's a go-to for lunch when I'm in that area), but it's also something I've noticed at our Kroger-owned grocery chain, where they used to offer that first slice as a sample when you ordered your quarter-pound of Boars Head turkey but no longer do. They all claim it isn't about money -- they say it's about making for a "better customer experience" -- but it's not a better customer experience, so it has to be about money. (Miami Herald)
