Where Richie/Dick Allen And Tony Taylor Once Trod
-
When Connie Mack Stadium/Shibe Park hosted its last Phillies game in 1970, the end was famously a disaster: as the winning run crossed the plate in extra innings, fans, who had spend much of the night dismantling seats and tearing fixtures out of the park, stormed the field, ripping chunks of turf away and stealing the bases and anything else that wasn't nailed down (and much that WAS). Now, 47 years later, I find out through this article that someone took a patch of that turf and planted it on my college campus, at Haverford College in Philadelphia's Main Line suburbs. Seriously, unbeknownst to anyone but the guy who did it and a handful of others, a piece of the field from the old dump was growing under a tree, and I must have walked by it a million times without any clue it was there. Shouldn't there be a plaque or something? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
