1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
Incredible. Outstanding. Awesome. Marvelous! I started in promotions and loved every second of it. Local from the start, I grew up in the market and was able to take part in every cool event around. People I knew thought it was cool to see me working for stations we grew up listening to. I didn't care if I was taping up banner or picking up trash after a local show because it meant I was there and that's all that mattered.
2) What led you to a career in radio?
I walked into a bar one night and had a job in radio the next day. Raised an SF Giants fan, I was bar hopping to watch SF in the World Series, but it was a Monday night during football pre-season so every bar had football on. I finally ended up at a bar where ESPN970 Modesto/Stockton was doing a MNF promotion but the bar had 15 TVs so I begged them to change the channel. Jim Wells, the host of ESPN, said if I convinced the bar to change a TV, he would do it. So I went to work joking and BS'ing with the patrons, then asking them if I could watch the game, and they let me. Jim Wells introduced me to his Marketing Director and I was driving station vehicles by the next day.
3) What are you doing social media-wise?
Instagram, FB, Twitter, Tumblr, Yelp, LinkedIn, Pinterest and my blog www.WithMadden.com.
4) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Being married to the PD, Joe Roberts. Joe and I met my first year in radio while working for separate stations and started a relationship. I moved to Charlotte in 2005, then moved back to KHOP in 2007 and by then, Joe was the PD. We worked closely together and fell in love with each other and our passions for radio. Some days are difficult when we disagree on a morning show concept or station promotion but in the end, he's the boss (at work). I admire Joe's passion and believe he's a radio genius, but he also pisses me off sometimes. You win some, you lose some.
5) What's the coolest promotion you've ever been involved with?
Will Call: The quest to meet Will Ferrell, who taped Talladega Nights at Charlotte's Motor Speedway (Lowe's at the time) when I was on the Ace&TJ Show in NC. Ace & TJ know everybody in that area so they dropped little notes with Will's limo driver, trainer, bar tender, etc. to "Listen to the Ace & TJ show," then every day we'd say "What's up Will, we want to meet you" on the air. Will Ferrell came strolling in by day. It was incredible! He's one of the funniest guys I've ever met.
6) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I have crazy good stalker-hacker-type skills. It's awesome, addicting and most likely illegal.
7) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
KAT Country 103.3 in Modesto/Stockton. KAT is a KHOP sister station, so when I first stepped in the cluster's doors, it was surreal to meet all the voices in my radio. I always loved DJ Walker from KAT, so working in the office next to him was a dream come true for me.
8) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I give myself "Man Days" where I grill, build things and drink beer. My last few projects furnished a four-wheeler, kid tractor, a giant trampoline and enough cans to recycle into a new pair of shoes.
9) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
How fun it is. Even on the worst days, radio is fun! The people we meet, the shows we see, the look on a kids' facees when you tell them they get to meet their favorite artist. All of it. I love all of it. TMZ, Pinterest, Ladies Nights and festivals are job requirements. My friends get in trouble for late nights, gossip and web surfing at their jobs ....and it's what we get paid to do! How can you not love this job?
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Be nice, don't burn your bridges and do whatever you're told to do. Just do it. The boss tells you to dress like a monkey, bring three monkey suits to choose from. Be in the building all the time so when a job opens, you're there. Do not let anyone in the building forget who you are and why you're amazing.
Which character on a current TV series most reflects your personality?
I texted my friends and they said Brandi Glanville (RHOBH) mixed with the ladies on Cougar Town. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'll have another drink and think about it...
