BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
- Promo/night show intern at WDCG/Raleigh
- Nights/APD/MD WABB/Mobile (RIP)
- Nights/APD/weekends WHQC/Charlotte
- PD/talent WAEV/Savannah
1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
A Master class in how a radio station should be run, thanks to Randi West and Brody at WDCG. My time as an intern in Raleigh really laid the groundwork for how I would look at our industry as I continued down this path. The lessons I learned there still guide me today.
2) How would describe the radio landscape in your market?
Busy. Two, even three stations in some cases within the same format. It's very competitive.
3) What makes your station unique? How would you compare it to other stations you've worked at?
Johnjay & Rich. They have been a team for 15 years and even though they are based in PHX, they are heard all over Arizona due to their affiliates in Tucson and Flagstaff. They connect with the audience through their show, they have a charity to help foster kids, a social movement with #LoveUp, Johnjay rescues, and helps to find homes for dogs. Stations in the past have fans within the metro, but this is a whole state. They are everywhere, and everyone knows them. It's safe to say they are Arizona's morning show.
4) What is your favorite part of the job?
I'm split -- 50% music programing, 50% on-air. I got into this business for one, and ended up falling in love with the other.
5) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Not having enough hours in the day ... or caffeine.
6) What artist would we be surprised to find on your personal playlist?
Kenny Chesney. Maybe not a huge surprise since I'm from the South, but I'm a huge fan.
7) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
Jimmy Fallon or James Corden. Would love an hour with each.
8) Who were your mentors? Who would you say has influenced your career the most?
Randi West, Geller (Now Ross Hayes), Chris Michaels, Boomer, Mat Mitchell, Steve Geofferies, Tommy Chuck, Jack Spade. I like to think there wasn't one who influenced me "more," I think they all have, and continue to contribute to the programmer/talent, even person I am today.
9) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Each time you crack the mic, you're making a new friend. Be that person sitting next to them in the car.
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Work hard, and don't say no. It'll get you to where you want to go.
