BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Caught the bug early. Got my first job labeling CDs and carts in 1992 at Classic Rock KARX/Amarillo, TX. Learned the board by watching the jocks work then moved my way into overnights and weekends. I also helped launch Top 40 BUD 99-7 with Bill Lacy and Buzz Bennett. After I graduated high school in '94, I took a semester at Amarillo College, worked at FM90 with the great Jamey Karr, then got a full time job at Top 40 KQIZ (Z-93) and worked my way through the ranks there. Worked with great people like Ted Kelly, Scotty Davis (now afternoons at WFLZ) and Robbie Green (now chief engineer at Cumulus Houston). Did a quick stint at KNIN/Wichita Falls, some punk kid interned with me there and now wakes up Seattle, way to go Fitz! Left Amarillo in March of 2000 and made the move to become MD/afternoons at Citadel OKC just after they launched Top 40/Rhythmic WILD 97.9. After the ABC merger I moved over to Rock KATT for a bit and also started working with KYIS. Became PD of both stations in November of 2008...also started doing high school football play by play last year for WWLS, our sports station. What a blast!
1. Why Radio?
I remember listening to Power 104 KRBE and 93Q in Houston growing up and just loved imitating the jocks. Told my mom & dad to buy me a tape recorder and I would rattle off intros of songs I recorded. I just loved it!
2. To date, what is the highlight of your radio career?
A friend of mine who played arena football here in OKC was diagnosed with cancer back a few years ago and my wife and I organized a fundraiser that raised almost $40,000 for him and his family. I really saw the power of radio first hand. We ran some PSAs on the stations and the response was amazing.
3. You've been in the Oklahoma City market for a long time now. What's been the biggest change in the market since your arrival?
The arrival of the OKC Thunder NBA team has really transformed OKC into the spotlight. From the nightclub scene to restaurants to traffic everything seems bigger now that we're a big league city. This past season was simply amazing!
4. Let's talk about your health. Any changes recently?
Why yes, I had weight loss surgery in March and have lost 70 pounds so far. I was over 300 lbs and I'm down to 240 trying to get to 210. Needed a tool to change my lifestyle and it's been great! I eat totally different now. I also quit smoking back in February and I'm becoming more active than ever trying to keep up with my 13 almost 14 year old who is taller than me and can probably whip my ass.
5. Who's on your air staff now at KKWD?
Joey and Heather do mornings along with Nugget...Bobby does our night show. Both shows are very active in the club scene and the nightshow hitting high schools during football season, OKC Thunder basketball games and of course White Water Bay water park now that it's 105 out everyday!
6. If you had to pick an artist to be your date to the Grammy Awards who would you pick?
Katy Perry...Got a total crush on her...(sorry honey)
7. Think back to being 10 years-old. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Caught the radio bug at about that age...Also wanted to drive a Top Fuel NHRA dragster...Still love the smell of nitro in the morning!
8. If you could be on any TV reality show, which would you want to be on?
I think it would be interesting to work with those guys on Gold Rush digging for gold in Alaska. Looks challenging and the being in the Alaska frontier would be a sight. Always wanted to visit there.
9. Which are scarier vampires or zombies?
Well with all this bath salt non sense going on...zombies! I told my boy Scotty, who's in Tampa, to watch out!
10. What's the most romantic spot in Oklahoma City?
My back porch.
Bonus Questions
If you were to leave Radio and music today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I would love to be a meteorologist. I'm fascinated with weather and do some storm chasing in the spring. My buddy Jay used to chase for the local ABC station and taught me the ropes. Living in Oklahoma you got to be on guard with tornadoes!
If you could only watch one movie, one TV show and listen to one CD for two months, which of each would you choose?
Movie-Blues Brothers, TV show-New Girl...that show cracks me up! CD-One Republic "Dreaming Out Loud" one of my favorites!
