BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started as a weekender at KS1075 in 2001. I moved to Over nights in 2004, named Assistant MD in 2008, Programming Assistant in 2009 and promoted to MD in 2011.
1. If you weren't MD/Prod. Dir. at KQKS, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Really hard to tell, been at KS since I was 15 years old and a listener years before that so kind of hard to imagine what else I'd be doing. Big into politics and got my first degree in Political Science so maybe something in that alley, or maybe something else music related whether it was DJ'ing or promotion of some sort. Although I am hearing that growing medicinal marijuana has become a profitable endeavor out here lately given certain laws that have been passed here recently.
2. What record has probably been the biggest surprise of 2013?
Probably for KS I would have to say Will.I.Am's "Scream & Shout"...While I loved the record on first listen, being the Rhythm station we are at KQKS whose audience tastes usually lean for the more hip-hop Top 40 record and with Brittany Spears being one artist that we couldn't really get away with in the past, even as a featured artist, I wouldn't have bet on it being as big as it was for us, but a smash is a smash and Will.I.Am put a brilliant record together.
I think one record that is GOING to surprise people this year is DJ Felli Fell's new record he just put out with Ne-Yo, Wiz Khalifa and Tyga called 'Reason to Hate'. I've had that on repeat all week. Will be interesting to see how it does.
3. Not that it would ever happen but...If you were in a bar fight, who on the KS107.5 staff would you want fighting alongside you?
Haha, well we all fight for that #1 spot together so I'd want them all fighting along side me (although our afternoon talent DJ Chonz is always entering wrestling tournaments and his nephew Jon Jon helps train Denver's own boxing world champion Mike Alvarado so I'm sure he knows a few moves.)
4. How are the college classes going?
Going great, got my initial degree in Political Science and then once it became pretty evident that I probably won't be running for President anytime soon figured I'd get a degree that can help me with my future goals and becoming a Program Director is very important to me. I felt having a degree in Business Management would be a good course of action, and fortunately Lincoln Financial has amazing tuition assistance programs that are helping me further my education (although its definitely a handful writing all those lengthy papers at night after a long busy day...definitely looking forward to a Summer break)
5. What's your favorite song on the station right now?
Probably Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 'Can't Hold Us'. Lee L'Heureux at Warner Bros had sent me Macklemore's album the week it came out a long time ago and I had not heard of him at that point and was one of those rare albums I could sit through the entire thing and love every track, and out of all of those "Can't Hold Us" was my favorite so just as a music fan I am loving seeing Macklemore's success grow by the minute and am excited to see where he goes from here (including KS1075 Summer Jam XVI here in June!!!)
6. Most important thing that your boss, John E. Kage has taught you about life?
I hear so many horror stories of people and their bosses and I got really lucky to have been in a position to be a Music Director for Kage, because the music knowledge in and of itself is so valuable and there's a reason KQKS has consistently been #1 for so long whether its PPM or whether it was the Arbitron diaries back in the day.
Fortunately he's taught me a lot in terms of "life" as well because he's just taught me that if you're a good person and you work hard good things will come. Treating people with respect, staying ethical even when at times it may be easier not to be, putting in the time to make sure everything is done right...just a lot of things that all combine to make a good solid foundation to work on. Anybody who's worked with Kage knows the hard work he puts in and I just try to be soak up as much knowledge as I can and help in every way I can!
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Lately homework...but anyone who's my friend on Facebook knows I take part in the enjoyable (or to some annoying) act of posting food pix to make people hungry at inopportune times and also love checking out any of our sports teams when they are playing and have had a blast at our KS1075 Denver Nuggets Jam Nights where our listeners got to sit in our section for $10.75 (and the Nuggets were undefeated for all of the games.)
8. Hypothetical...you need to find a hot, talented actress to co-host your show for 2 weeks. Who would you choose?
I am convinced at some point I will find a way to trick Eva Mendes into being my wife so I wouldn't want just two weeks and I think Salma Hayak is married so I wouldn't want to ruin that.... so probably Mila Kunis based on how awesome she looked..I mean acted...in Ted.
9. First thing about a hit song that usually jumps out at you?
Definitely the hook....obviously you want some good production underneath it but I want a strong hook and I want it within 1 minute of the song playing (Preferably right off the bat.) I talked about Macklemore's 'Cant Hold Us' earlier and as brilliant as the song already was, the radio edit they made with that hook right at the front made it the perfect radio smash.
10. What's your 'go to', favorite meal in Denver?
A lot of people may have seen Jack N Grill on Man vs Food but that is definitely one of my favorite spots in Denver and their Beef and Potato Sopa is amazing. Also a special kudos to Finn McCools Penne Pasta Jambalaya.....one of my favorite dishes around and luckily its right by the station.
Bonus Questions
Is this the year for another Denver Broncos Super Bowl win?
Von Miller guaranteed a Super Bowl win this season so who I am to tell him he's wrong. That was a tough loss and while I'm glad if anyone were to beat us it was the ones moving on to win it all. It still felt like this was the season we were going to bring a ring back to the Mile High! I'm looking forward to Denver smashing Baltimore in the first NFL game of the season!
As we do this quick interview, It's about 80 degrees in Malibu. Why is it that you hate me?
Any time I post on Facebook about cold weather in Denver, you enjoys bragging about the warmth in Cali and my hatred for you grows with every post, Pete! Haha! Despite some random late snow storms this month, I'm hoping for the warmth to return here soon.
